I’m a 40-year-old mother, and I genuinely believed my 13-year-old daughter was spending her weekends having innocent sleepovers at her best friend’s house. That was until her friend’s mother sent me a message that made my stomach drop.
“Jordan hasn’t been here in weeks.”
In that moment, I realized my daughter had been lying to me. What I didn’t know was where she’d actually been going—or why she’d been keeping it a secret.
I’m 40, and my daughter, Jordan, is 13.
She’s had the same best friend for as long as I can remember. Her name is Alyssa, and I know her mother, Tessa. We aren’t particularly close, the kind of friends who share every secret, but we’ve been through enough birthday parties, school events, and carpool arrangements that I trusted her.
When Jordan first started asking to sleep over at Alyssa’s house more frequently, I was careful about it. I checked with Tessa, made sure the arrangements were okay, and wanted to know where my daughter would be.
At first, it happened about once a month.
Then it became every other weekend.
Before long, it was practically a routine. Every Friday afternoon, I’d see Jordan bringing out her backpack.
“You asked Tessa?” I’d call after her.
“Yeah, Mom,” she’d sigh. “She said it’s fine.”
During the first month, I made a point of texting Tessa every time Jordan headed over.
“Jordan’s on her way! 😊”
Tessa would usually respond with something simple.
“Got her!”
Or:
“Okay!”
After a while, the whole arrangement began to feel automatic. Safe. Normal.
I stopped sending a message every single time. Instead, I stuck to the usual motherly reminders at the front door.
“Be good. Be respectful. Text me if you need anything.”
“Mom, stop,” Jordan would groan. “I know.”
I had no reason to suspect anything was wrong.
Then last Tuesday happened.
Jordan left the house with her overnight bag, headphones on, and shouted, “Love you!” over her shoulder as she walked out.
I was loading the dishwasher when I suddenly remembered that my birthday was coming up. I thought it might be nice to invite a few friends over, perhaps Tessa too. After all, she had practically become my daughter’s weekend host.
So I picked up my phone and sent her a message.
“Hey Tessa! My birthday’s soon, and I’d love to have you over if you’re free. Also, thanks again for letting Jordan stay the night. I really appreciate it. 💛”
